Digestive Enzymes, often called the “Third Wave” in nutritional science, are catalysts necessary for the proper digestion of the food we eat. Enzymes help digest our food i.e. they break down proteins into amino acids, simple and complex carbohydrates into monosaccharide, and fats into fatty acids and glycerol. These are the “building blocks’ that the body uses to produce energy and to build its own unique molecules for repair and growth.

Digestive enzymes are significant because digestion of food is impossible without them. Ideally the food we eat should contain sufficient enzymes to assist the digestive process and to supplement the body’s own enzyme supply. If one’s diet is mainly of raw, uncooked food, then adequate enzyme status is likely. However, heat destroys enzymes and cooked food contains almost no enzyme activity. In other words, cooked food is “dead” food, and will put stress on the body’s own enzyme supply. When the diet consists mainly of cooked and processed food, symptoms of digestive disorders can appear: and supplements of digestive enzymes can prove very beneficial in these circumstances.

DIGEST BOOST is especially formulated to provide the digestive system with the enzymes necessary to insure adequate digestion and absorption of the food we eat.

BETAINE HCL, produced from beet molasses, compliments the declining ability of the body to produce sufficient hydrochloric acid to insure proper protein digestion in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid production declines naturally as we age, but the increasing use of antacids and calcium supplements containing calcium carbonate accelerates this process, with the resultant digestive disorders.

BROMELAIN, produced from pineapple, has many benefits in addition to its protein digesting abilities. Bromelain relaxes smooth muscles, relieves sinusitis, enhances wound healing and acts on blood platelets. As a protein digestive aid, Bromelain has an advantage in that it can function over a wide pH range, showing activity in the stomach (low pH) and in the small intestine (higher pH).

PAPAIN, produced from papaya fruit, has a mild, soothing effect on the stomach and aids in protein digestion.

AMYLASE is an enzyme concentration from the microbe: Aspergillus oryzae. Amylase refers to a group of enzymes whose catalytic function is to hydrolyze (breakdown) sugar and starch. Amylase digests carbohydrates (polysaccharides) into smaller disaccharide units, eventually converting them into monosaccharides such as glucose. People who are fat intolerant (can't digest fats) often eat sugar and carbohydrates to make up for the lack of fat in their diet. If their diet is excessive in carbohydrates, they may develop an amylase deficiency.

LIPASE is an enzyme that hydrolyzes lipids, the ester bonds in triglycerides, to form fatty acids and glycerol. Fats require special digestive action before absorption because the end products must be carried in a water medium (blood and lymph) in which fats are not soluble. Lipase is the primary digestive enzyme used to split fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Although little actual fat digestion occurs in the stomach, gastric lipase does digest already emulsified fats such as in egg yolk and cream.

While too much fat in our diet can cause severe health conditions including heart disease and cancer, some fats are essential. All cell membranes and other structures are made up of lipids, thus an adequate supply of essential fatty acids in the diet is important to ensure viable cells. As important as it is to limit your fat intake, it is equally important to ensure that you properly digest the fat you do eat. If fats (lipids) are not properly broken down before they are absorbed, some health consequences may occur.
